Plays smoothly through CrossOver on Apple Silicon.
CrossOver runs Prey (2006) natively on Apple Silicon by translating DirectX to Metal. One-click install, no Windows VM, full local performance.
Prey (2006) follows Domasi 'Tommy' Tawodi, a Cherokee garage mechanic who is abducted alongside his girlfriend and grandfather by a massive bio-organic spacecraft known as the Sphere. As the ship begins harvesting Earth's population for biological matter, Tommy must embrace his spiritual heritage to fight back using a unique blend of organic alien weaponry and traditional Cherokee powers.
Standing out from its contemporaries, the game features mind-bending level design that utilizes Portals—years before Valve's Portal became a household name—and wall-walking gravity paths. These mechanics create disorienting and innovative combat encounters where enemies can attack from any surface, set against a dark, visceral sci-fi atmosphere that feels both organic and industrial.
Prey (2006) runs flawlessly on Apple Silicon using CrossOver, offering a near-native experience despite being a Windows-only legacy title.
preyconfig.cfg file (found in the game folder) to match your native resolution using seta r_customwidth and seta r_customheight.Parallels Desktop
As an older OpenGL title, Prey runs quite well in a Parallels Windows 11 VM. However, you may experience slightly more input lag than CrossOver and lower frame pacing consistency. Parallels is a good choice if you already have it installed for work or other software.

Running Prey (2006) through CrossOver translates its Windows DirectX calls into Metal on Apple Silicon — no reboot, no Windows license, no virtual machine. Most setup time is spent on first-time bottle configuration and installing the game launcher (Steam, Epic, etc.) inside CrossOver. Once that's done, launching feels close to native. Expect 15–30 minutes of setup on the first run.
Step 1 — Create a bottle
Prey (2006)) and choose Windows 10 64-bit- Graphics: D3DMetal (not DXVK)
- Synchronization: ESync
- High Resolution Mode: Off
Step 2 — Install the game launcher
Step 3 — Install and launch Prey (2006)
Step 4 — If you hit issues
Using Parallels to play Prey (2006) means running a full copy of Windows 11 ARM inside macOS. This is the most "it just works" approach for games that don't behave under CrossOver, and DirectX 11 is hardware-accelerated. You'll need a Windows license and roughly 80 GB of disk space.
Streaming Prey (2006) through GeForce NOW is the fastest way to start playing on a Mac — there's nothing to install, no Windows VM, no compatibility layer. The game runs on a remote GPU and your Mac just receives the video, which means even a base M1 MacBook Air can play the most demanding AAA titles at high settings. The tradeoff is that you need a stable internet connection (ideally wired or 5GHz Wi-Fi with 25+ Mbps down) and a subscription.
For most Mac players we recommend CrossOver as the fastest, smoothest way to play Prey (2006). One-click local install, official support.
