Lord of the Rings: War in the North
Lord of the Rings: War in the North is a cooperative action-RPG that explores a parallel narrative to the main Fellowship of the Ring journey. Set in the northern reaches of Middle-earth, players take control of a trio of heroes—a Dunedain ranger, a Dwarven warrior, and an Elven lore-master—as they strike out against the forces of Agandaûr, Sauron's powerful lieutenant. The game emphasizes bloody, visceral combat and loot progression, featuring a loot system reminiscent of Diablo but viewed through a third-person hack-and-slash lens.
What makes the game stand out is its commitment to three-player cooperative play and its darker, more mature tone compared to other Tolkien adaptations. Each character possesses unique skill trees and abilities that must be synchronized to overcome massive trolls, uruk-hai, and giant spiders. It remains a cult favorite for its atmospheric world-building and the satisfying weight of its combat mechanics.
This game was delisted from Steam and all digital PC storefronts in 2019 due to expired licensing. It is currently unavailable to purchase or play on modern Mac systems through standard compatibility layers without a pre-existing Steam library copy.
What the world thinks
- Install CrossOver: Ensure you have CrossOver 23.5 or newer installed.
- Create a Bottle: Create a new 'Windows 7 64-bit' bottle (Steam works best within this).
- Install Steam: Use the CrossOver installer to put Steam into that bottle.
- Install the Game: Login to Steam and download Lord of the Rings: War in the North.
- Toggle Settings: In the right-hand sidebar of CrossOver, ensure D3DMetal is OFF (the game prefers DXVK) and MSync is ON.
- DirectX Runtimes: If the game crashes on launch, use the 'Install Software into Bottle' menu to manually add 'DirectX Modern Runtime' to your game bottle.
- VMware Fusion / Parallels: While the game will run in a virtual machine, performance is significantly lower than CrossOver. Parallels 19+ can handle the game, but you may experience lighting glitches or 'black textures' on character models.
- Whisky: Similar to CrossOver, but as a free wrapper, it sometimes struggles with the specific 32-bit dependencies this title requires. If using Whisky, ensure you follow the 'Legacy' bottle configuration.
