Gothic 1
War has been waged across the kingdom of Myrtana. Whoever breaks the law in these darkest of times is sentenced to serve in the giant penal colony of Khorinis, mining the so much needed...
Gothic 1 is technically unsupported, but it is highly playable on Apple Silicon using CrossOver or Porting Kit, provided that community stability patches like Union or SystemPack are installed.
What the world thinks
- Install the Game: Install the Steam version of Gothic 1 into a Win10 64-bit bottle.
- Gothic Engine Fixes: You must install the 'Union' patch or 'Gothic SystemPack'. These community fixes allow the game to handle modern resolutions and fix the frame timing issues that cause crashes on Mac hardware.
- DirectX Mapping: Set your bottle configuration to use D3DMetal (if on macOS Sonoma/Sequoia) or DXVK. If the game crashes at the menu, disable the 'Steam Overlay' in the Steam game settings.
- Community Patch (Highly Recommended): Search for 'Gothic 1 Community Patch' to fix game-breaking bugs that persist in the vanilla Steam version.
- VMware Fusion / Parallels Desktop: Gothic 1 is a DX7 title, so it runs reasonably well in a Virtual Machine. However, you will still need the SystemPack/Union patches to prevent the game from being stuck in a tiny window or crashing during the intro cinematic.
- Porting Kit: A pre-made wrapper exists on Porting Kit specifically for the GOG version of Gothic 1. This is often the easiest 'one-click' solution for users who aren't comfortable manually configuring Wine bottles.
