GTA V is the second most searched game on this site, and the answer to "can I play it on my Mac" has changed twice in the last eighteen months. If you read a Reddit thread from 2024 telling you to run it through CrossOver, that advice is out of date. This is the current picture, method by method, with the reasoning so you can judge it for yourself.

The short version

You can play GTA V on any Apple Silicon Mac today. The catch is that the version of the game and the mode you want decide the method.

Story mode with the least effort: stream it through Boosteroid or Xbox Cloud Gaming. Nothing to install, works on a base M1 MacBook Air, and you are playing in five minutes.

GTA Online: stream it. BattlEye anti-cheat blocks Online under CrossOver, and it is not worth the account risk to try. Parallels is the only local route that gets Online running, and it comes with a full Windows licence and a hit to performance.

Story mode locally, with the best visuals your Mac can manage: Parallels with Windows 11 ARM. CrossOver can work with the older Legacy build but it is no longer the reliable choice it once was.

What changed: Enhanced, Legacy and BattlEye

In March 2025 Rockstar split the PC version in two. GTA V Enhanced is the new build with ray tracing, faster loading and the current version of GTA Online. GTA V Legacy is the original 2015 PC release, still on Steam as a separate entry for existing owners.

Enhanced is what you get if you buy the game today. It ships with BattlEye, the same anti-cheat used in Rainbow Six Siege and PUBG. BattlEye needs a kernel driver, and a kernel driver cannot run inside a compatibility layer like CrossOver. That is the whole story for why Online broke on Mac. It is not a bug CodeWeavers can patch. It is a deliberate check that the game is running on real Windows.

The macgamingdb community reports on the Enhanced build under CrossOver are unanimous: unplayable. Some people get story mode to launch, more do not, and none get Online.

Legacy does not carry BattlEye. That is why older guides worked, and why they now only apply if you own the Legacy build and are happy with the 2015 version of the game.

Method 1: Boosteroid (best for most people)

Boosteroid runs GTA V on a Windows PC in a data centre and streams the video to your Mac. Your Mac is doing nothing more demanding than playing a video call, so the model does not matter. An eight-year-old Intel MacBook Air can run it.

You need to own the game on Steam or the Rockstar Store, and you need a Boosteroid subscription. Log in through the Boosteroid app or a browser, link your Steam account, and launch. Online works because the game is running on a real Windows machine with BattlEye active.

The trade-off is latency and image quality. On a wired connection or good Wi-Fi with under 40ms ping, story mode feels close to local. Online is playable but you will notice the delay in tight driving or gunfights against people on local hardware. If your internet is unstable, streaming is frustrating and no other advice will fix that.

Boosteroid's standard plan streams at 1080p, so on a 5K iMac or a 16 inch MacBook Pro the image is softer than a native render. Most people stop noticing after ten minutes.

Method 2: Xbox Cloud Gaming

GTA V has come and gone from Xbox Cloud Gaming as it has moved in and out of Game Pass. When it is in the library, the experience is the same idea as Boosteroid, running through a browser on your Mac. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming library before you subscribe, because availability shifts with Game Pass deals rather than with anything Rockstar controls.

If you already pay for Game Pass Ultimate and the game is listed, this is the cheapest route by a distance.

Method 3: Parallels Desktop (best local option)

Parallels installs a full copy of Windows 11 ARM inside macOS. GTA V then runs inside real Windows, which means BattlEye loads and both story mode and Online work.

This is the only way to play GTA Online locally on a Mac, and it is the option we recommend for anyone who has a Pro or Max chip and a poor internet connection.

The costs are real. Parallels is a subscription, Windows 11 needs a licence, and the virtual machine takes a chunk of your RAM and GPU. On a 16GB M1 or M2 you will be at low settings at 1080p and performance will dip in the city. On an M3 Pro or M4 Pro with 32GB or more it is comfortable at medium to high settings. Give the virtual machine at least 8GB of RAM and half your CPU cores.

Set up in this order: install Parallels, let it download Windows 11 ARM, install Steam or the Rockstar Launcher inside Windows, install GTA V Enhanced, then run the game once at default settings before you touch anything. The first launch compiles shaders and takes several minutes.

Method 4: CrossOver (only for the Legacy build)

CrossOver translates Windows calls to macOS without a Windows install, which is why it is normally the fastest and simplest way to run Windows games on a Mac. For GTA V that is no longer true.

If you own GTA V Legacy, CrossOver still runs it and story mode performs well on M2 and later. Install CrossOver, create a Windows 10 64-bit bottle, install Steam inside it, install GTA V Legacy, and enable D3DMetal in the bottle settings. Expect 1080p at medium settings on a base M2, high on a Pro chip.

If you own GTA V Enhanced, do not bother. The game may launch into story mode for you, and it may not, and BattlEye will stop Online every time. There are guides online that suggest workarounds to get past the anti-cheat. Do not follow them. Rockstar bans for anti-cheat tampering and there is no appeal.

Method 5: GeForce NOW

GTA V has been on and off GeForce NOW more than once since 2020. Rather than tell you the state it is in today and be wrong next month, the safe advice is to search the GeForce NOW library before you pay for a tier. If it is listed, GeForce NOW on a Mac is a good experience, particularly on the Ultimate tier with a fast connection, and it supports Online for the same reason Boosteroid does.

Which Mac do you need?

For streaming: any Mac that runs a current browser. Model does not matter.

For Parallels: an Apple Silicon Mac with at least 16GB of RAM for story mode at low settings, 32GB for a comfortable experience. Intel Macs can run Windows in Parallels, but GTA V on an Intel Mac's GPU through a virtual machine is a slideshow, so treat Intel as streaming only.

For CrossOver with Legacy: any Apple Silicon Mac. A base M1 manages 1080p at low, and it climbs from there.

Common problems

The game launches to a black screen in CrossOver: you are almost certainly on the Enhanced build. Check the Steam library entry. Legacy is listed separately.

Boosteroid stutters: run a wired connection or move closer to the router, and set the Boosteroid quality to Auto rather than forcing 1080p60. Close anything else using bandwidth on the same network.

Parallels performance is poor: check that the VM has at least 8GB of RAM and 4 cores, and that Windows is using the Parallels display driver. Turn off MSAA in the GTA V graphics settings before touching anything else, as it costs more than every other setting combined on Apple GPUs.

Rockstar Launcher will not sign in under CrossOver: this is intermittent and usually clears after a CrossOver update. If it persists, install through Steam inside the bottle instead and let Steam handle the Rockstar sign-in.

Where to buy

Enhanced is the only version sold new. It is on Steam and on Green Man Gaming, and the price moves often enough that the Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced page tracks it rather than this post. If you plan to use CrossOver and want Legacy, it is only available to people who already owned GTA V before the split.

Our recommendation is to buy on whichever store is cheaper this week and stream through Boosteroid, unless you have a Pro or Max Mac with plenty of RAM and want Online without the latency, in which case Parallels earns its cost.
